Natural Bridge

Natural Bridge

This geological formation is worth seeing. Plus also boasts nearby caverns and a zoo> There are some camping sites or you can stay at the Natural Bridge Historic Hotel & Conference Center.

Ghost Ships of Kiptopeke

Ghost Ships of Kiptopeke

A visit to Kiptopeke State Park is worth it just to see the infamous Concrete Fleet, also known as the Kiptopeke Breakwater, which consists of 9 of the concrete ships (yes, concrete) that were contracted back during World War II.  Photo by Matt Flowers.

Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns

A bit pricier than most (I'm used to Carlsbad Caverns rates), but just about a 2 hour drive from Richmond, Luray Caverns is open every day of the year. Tours depart approximately every twenty minutes. The General Admission ($27) includes the attraction entrance fee and Luray Caverns tour, a self-guided tour of the Car and Carriage Caravan, and the Luray Valley Museum. Tours begin each day at 9 am.

Natural Tunnel State Park

Natural Tunnel State Park

You can hike or take the chair lift down (when available) to this amazing natural tunnel. The park has five picnic shelters and seven walking trails. There are also cabins available.

The map alone to this area is a little overwhelming but definitely seems like a giant playground for the outdoor enthusiasts with camping sites and hiking trails. The trail down to the tunnel though is quite a workout and takes about 20-30 minutes.

Dinosaur Land

Dinosaur Land

If you just so happen to be driving on I-66 you should definitely hop off exit 6 and visit Dinosaur Land. For $6 you can go humor yourself and take a bunch of selfies with over 50 dinosaurs (and few other misc creatures). Plus the property boasts an infamous gift shop as well.

Humpback Bridge

Humpback Bridge

If you need a reason to get out of the house for a weekend then Humpback Bridge can be reached from Interstate 64 by taking exit 10 to Route 60 and traveling one-half mile east, or by taking Route 60 west from Covington. Built in 1857, it's the oldest covered bridge in Virginia.

Meem's Bottom Bridge

Meem's Bottom Bridge

If you have an itchin' to go through Shenandoah County then Meem's Bottom Bridge is reached easily from Interstate 81 at exit 269 between New Market and Mount Jackson. Follow Route 730 from the interchange for four-tenths of a mile to Route 11. Go north on Route 11 for nine-tenths of a mile to Route 720 and the west a short distance to the river. This one has be reinforced so you'll feel less nervous going through it. Ha.
